Fractional CTO

A fractional CTO with a team behind the advice.

Senior technical leadership for a few hours a week, without a $300,000 executive hire. And because Agapi is a development team, the decisions your fractional CTO makes get built, not just written down.

A fractional CTO is an experienced technology leader who works with your business part-time: setting direction, making the build-versus-buy calls, choosing vendors, reviewing what your developers or agencies deliver, and translating between you and the technical world. You get the judgement of a CTO for a fraction of the cost of employing one.

The usual catch is that advice is all you get. Agapi's fractional CTO services come with our own senior engineers, so when the plan says "connect these two systems" or "replace that spreadsheet with a real tool", the same team can do it. Strategy and delivery in one relationship, with one point of contact.

What you get

Technical leadership you can actually act on

A technology plan for the business

Where your systems are today, what is slowing the business down, and what to change in what order. Written for an owner, not for engineers.

Build, buy or integrate decisions

Whether the problem needs new software, an off-the-shelf tool, or an integration of what you already have. We have no software to sell you, so the answer is the honest one.

Vendor and agency oversight

Someone on your side who can read a proposal, review the work, and tell you whether you are getting what you paid for.

Architecture and security review

A plain-language assessment of how your systems fit together, where the risks are, and what to fix first.

Hiring and team help

Job descriptions, technical interviews, offer decisions and onboarding when you hire engineers or an in-house technology lead. Someone who has done the job runs the interviews.

Delivery when you want it

The decisions can be executed by Agapi's managed team under a clear scope and price. You never have to find a second vendor to act on the first one's advice.

How it works

How a fractional CTO engagement runs

  1. 01

    Technology review

In the first weeks we map your systems, data, vendors and pain points, and come back with the plan and the first priorities.

  2. 02

    A standing rhythm

A weekly or fortnightly session with you and whoever runs operations, plus availability by email in between. Decisions are made and written down.

  3. 03

    Work gets done

Priorities become scoped projects, delivered by your team, your vendors, or Agapi's engineers. The fractional CTO reviews what ships.

  4. 04

    Scale up or down

More hours during a migration or a hiring push, fewer when things are steady. No notice periods, no severance.

Who this is for: any size, scaled to the need

  • Businesses of every size: the owner-led firm where technology decisions land on the owner's desk, and the larger company or enterprise division that needs senior technical judgement for a migration, a platform decision or an AI initiative without adding an executive.
  • Companies with developers or agencies but nobody senior enough to direct them and judge their work.
  • Businesses facing a big decision: a new platform, a migration, an AI initiative, or a first in-house hire.
Pricing

A fraction of a CTO's salary

A full-time CTO or CIO costs $300,000 and up a year in salary alone, before bonus, equity and the search to find one. Most growing businesses need that level of judgement for a few hours a week, not a full-time executive.

Fractional CTO engagements are priced by the hours you need: from a standing fortnightly session with email access in between, up to several days a month during a migration, a platform decision or a hiring push. You get a monthly figure before the engagement starts, and it scales up or down with no notice period.

Common questions

Questions we hear about this work

What does a fractional CTO do?

Sets technology direction, makes build-versus-buy and vendor decisions, reviews architecture and security, oversees developers and agencies, and helps with technical hiring, all part-time. The business gets senior judgement without a full-time executive.

How many hours a week is a fractional CTO?

Typically two to ten hours a week. A standing session every one or two weeks, availability between sessions, and more time during a migration, a major decision or a hiring push.

What is the difference between a fractional CTO and a consultant?

A consultant delivers a report and leaves. A fractional CTO is accountable over time for the decisions and their results. With Agapi there is also a team to carry out the decisions, so the plan does not stall for lack of hands.

What is the difference between a fractional CTO and a fractional CIO?

A CTO owns the technology the business builds and runs: systems, software, architecture, vendors and the engineering work. A CIO leans toward internal IT, infrastructure and information management. For most growing businesses the two overlap, and the engagement covers both.

Can a fractional CTO help us hire a full-time one later?

Yes. Part of the job is knowing when the business has outgrown the arrangement, writing the role, interviewing candidates and handing over cleanly.

Do you work with our existing developers and agencies?

Yes. Most engagements involve directing and reviewing work done by others. We only propose Agapi's own team for delivery where that is the better option, and we say why.
